The best cheap holiday ideas in the UK
10 May 2019Let’s be honest, holidays are expensive. Even the most modest trip to Marbella can soon leave you scratching for money behind the sofa. With flights, accommodation, currency exchanges, days out and meals to consider, sometimes the cost can outweigh the benefit you’ll get back in terms of relaxation. Worry not, weary traveller! There is still hope!
Relaxation - real relaxation - doesn’t have to break the bank. We take a look at some of the most amazing holidays in the UK for the jetsetter on a budget. No jets required.
The long-weekend
The humble long-weekend break - the ‘get away from it all’ strategy. Book a day either side of the weekend, and wander off to see stunning British scenery, or take a trip to major culture hubs to drink it all in.
Sometimes a few days away is all you need to really recharge. We recommend Edinburgh for its whiskey trails and local landmarks, Bath if you’re feeling a little fancy, and Cornwall for the stunning scenery (plus the robust pasty scene). London is an obvious choice, combining nightlife, culture, and world-class watering holes!
Nab a hotel for the duration of the trip with some of our amazing deals, or take advantage of AirBnB - often featuring waterfront properties - to get a real taste of these fantastic locations.
International scenery; domestic travel costs
If you’re looking for something a little longer, the UK is well known for its stunning scenery. Take a week or two and visit a few. There’s something that too few Brits do… and that’s to treat our country like a tourist does. Why go to just one place? Why not move around a little to get the full experience?
That’s right, we’re talking road trips.
The South West of England (we’re Bristol based, so may be biased) is one of the best places to spend a week in - from Stonehenge to Cheddar Gorge, the South West is a hub full of culture on its own, and has convenient access routes down to Cornwall. Better yet, with time allowing, due east will take you to the rolling plans of Middle England - Sussex and Reading - to sample the delights on offer.
Perhaps take a trip over the water to Northern Ireland? Ferry your car across and explore the scenery behind Game of Thrones, or visit some more traditional landmarks like the Giant’s Causeway!
Whether you’re travelling by train, bus or boat, vouchercloud has you covered with ferries to Ireland, railcards and bus tours galore. Take a look at our travel & accommodation page for everything you’ll possibly need to make your holiday a success!
