The Red Funnel is over 150 years old and is the original Isle of Wight ferry service, although now instead of paddle steamers they have the largest car ferry boats and a high-speed Jet ferry passenger service as part of its fleet. All services leave from Southampton’s docks but the high-speed passenger ferries go to West Cowes and the car ferry service to East Cowes.
The Red Jet Hi-Speed passenger service means you can cross the Solent in 25 minutes (in contrast to the 1hr car ferry) at 40 knots (for you boating folk!) leaving Southampton every 30-60 minutes. This is perfect for a fleeting mini-break visit or routine business trips.
Aboard the Red Funnel’s vehicle ferries ‘Osprey’ and ‘Eagle’ you will find the well-stocked Bar1861 named after the year the Red Funnel was founded. Apparently, the Red Funnel breakfasts are something to write home about - perfect for soaking up the aftermath of too good a time.
