Up until the mid-19th century, Battersea Park was mainly made up of marshland and field where vegetables such as carrots and asparagus, along with lavender, were grown. In 1858, the area was used for a range of sporting activities after being opened as a public park. And, in 1951, the Festival of Britain celebrations transformed the area into a pleasure garden, before it was reopened as a zoo.
Today, Battersea Park Zoo is run by Carol and Roger Heap, who took over the much-loved zoo after it faced closure in 2003. With their passion for animals and experience running two other wildlife parks, they were able to transform Battersea Park Zoo into a great opportunity for children and young people to experience wildlife and learn about the animals we share our home with on the planet. With our Battersea Park Zoo offers, you will be able to enjoy a fun and educational experience meeting a huge range of wild animals and learning about how they are cared for, where they come from, and the plight of their species. By visiting the zoo, you’ll also be helping to raise funds for the many important conservation projects that they sponsor and contribute towards regularly.
